    Dear Sir/Madam,

On clearing out a suitcase which belonged to my late mother, I came across a copy of a letter (which I needed to tape together to be able to read same) – heading “from the Original in the possession of Arthur De Noe Walker Esq (Grandson) of Mrs Riddell of 21 Langham Place, London”. I quote part of the letter:

    “Madam,

I return your Common Place Book. I have perused with much pleasure, and would have continued my criticisms, but as it seems the Critic has forfeited your esteem, his strictures must lose their value.

There follows another three paragraphs and then it is signed

I have the honor to be, Madam, your most devoted humble servant, Robert Burns – Dumfries 12th January, 1794.”

If you wish to reply to this comment, could you please address any correspondence to the following address as at present I am having difficulties with my email system.

    Regards,

    Mrs Susan Payne,
