Edwin Moses Hale 1829 - 1899 was an orthodox doctor who converted to homeopathy graduated at the Cleveland Homoeopathic Medical College to become Professor Emeritus of Materia Medica and Therapeutics at Hahnemann Medical College, editor of the North American Journal of Homeopathy and The American Homeopathic Observer and a member of the American Institute of Homeopathy. Hale was also a member of The Chicago Literary Club.
Hale was instrumental in introducing many new remedies to our Pharmacopoeia, and he wrote numerous books which are still in use today by modern homeopaths.
The Hale family immigrated to America in 1637 and they can trace their ancestry to The Mayflower.
He was graduated at the Cleveland Homoeopathic Medical College in 1859, practised his profession for twelve years in Jonesville, Michigan, became in 1863 professor of materia medica and therapeutics in the Hahnemann Medical College, Chicago, and held the same chair in Chicago homoeopathic college from 1880 till 1884, when he became professor emeritus.
In 1871 he began a series of special lectures on diseases of the heart. In addition to his editorial connection with various journals he is the author of many monographs and of several treatises…
Hale was eager to see homeopathic colleges springing up across America and he viewed competition between them as healthy, honourable and high minded, but he warned against rivalry getting out of hand. As a result, homeopaths in America at this time established a collective identity, and dozens of departments and freestanding schools and affiliations crossed the country.
Hale was against abortion in principle, but he agreed that it was sometimes necessary and could be done without harm to the mother if her live was to be saved.
The Frost Flower Here is a fun exchange between Dr. Edwin Moses Hale, M.D. (1829-1899) and Asa Gray.
Based upon the dateline, it must have taken place sometime after 1863, the year in which Hale came to Chicago (from Michigan).
The “A.G.”-initialled, one sentence comment at the bottom is in Asa Gray’s hand. I found both the letter and newsclipping in Hale’s copy of Matthias Jakob Schleiden’s Poetry Of The Vegetable World (1853), edited by Alphonso Wood…
This book is of some interest in the history of American textbooks of botany. Emanuel D. Rudolph has studied it (see pages 48-58 of Emanuel D. Rudolph’s Studies in the History of North American Botany …
