Charles Edouard Drummond 5th Duke of Melfort (Melford) de jure 1752 – 1840 was a Roman Catholic prelate, attempted to reclaim his family’s ancestral lands:

At Rome, on the 9th ult., aged 88, the Right Rev. Charles Edward, fifth Duke of Melford, &c., and a Roman Catholic prelate.

This venerable nobleman was chief of the ancient and distinguished family of Drummond, and heir to the forfeited earldoms of Perth and Melfort (Lordship and Barony of Drummond and the Earldom of Perth), and other titles in Scotland, to which he would have been restored at the time of the restoration to the titles of Earl of Mar, Viscount Strathalan, &c., in 1825, but being a Roman Catholic and a prelate of that church, his claim was not then preferred.

He is succeeded by his only nephew and heir, George Drummond, Esq., a captain in the army, late of the 93rd Highlanders, who, as these titles have never been dropped by his ancestors, now bears them, which was generally done by the lineal descendants of the nobles attainted for their adherence to the unfortunate house of Stuart, before they were restored…

Charles Edouard Drummond 5th Duke of Melfort’s nephew George Drummond 6th Earl of Melfort and Earl of Perth was successful in his application and the Lordship and Barony of Drummond and the Earldom of Perth was restored to him 1853, the Earldom of Melfort was created in 1685 and became extinct in 1902,

George Drummond, 14th Earl of Perth was the son of Leon Maurice Drummond and Marie Elizabeth Lucie de Longemarre. He married, firstly, Baroness Albertine de Rotberg on 19 May 1831.

He married, secondly, Susanna Henrietta Bermingham Sewell, daughter of Thomas Bermingham Daly Henry Sewell and Hon. Harriet Beresford, in 1847.

He died on 28 February 1902.

As a Roman Catholic prelate, Charles Edouard Drummond 5th Duke of Melfort (Melford) de jure was probably not married, hence his title was inherited by his nephew George Drummond 6th Earl of Melfort and Earl of Perth, who married Baroness Albertine de Rotberg in 1831.

Samuel Hahnemann moved to Paris in 1835, and the title *‘Duchess of Melford’ could have not applied to anyone until 1840, when **George Drummond 6th Earl of Melfort and Earl of Perth **inherited the title in 1840. Thus, the *‘Duchess of Melford’ would have been his wife Baroness Albertine de Rotberg, who would have consulted Samuel Hahnemann sometime between 1840 and Samuel Hahnemann’s death in 1843.
