Francis Gray Smart 1844 - 1912 (1913) BA 1867 Cambridge, MA 1870 Cambridge, MB, FSA, FLS, FRGS, was an orthodox physician, first President of the Tunbridge Wells Amateur Photographic Association, member of the Royal Meteorological Society, member of Linnean Society of London, member of the Society of Antiquaries of London, member of the British Numismatic Society, member of the Royal Societies Club, who converted to homeopathy to become a Physician at the Tunbridge Wells and West Kent Homeopathic Dispensary, and the founder of the Tunbridge Wells Homeopathic Hospital,
Francis Gray Smart purchased the freehold of the property that was to become the Tunbridge Wells Homeopathic Hospital in Church Street, Tunbridge Wells in 1902 (the Tunbridge Wells Homeopathic Hospital developed out of the Tunbridge Wells and West Kent Homeopathic Dispensary).
Francis Gray Smart practiced in Tunbridge Wells, alongside Batchelour and Arthur de Noe Walker, and at the Tunbridge Wells and West Kent Homeopathic Dispensary,
Always a generous supporter, at his death he bequeathed £10,000 to the Hospital to be invested, and the interest only to be used for maintenance purposes. Mrs. Smart also bequeathed £5,000 unconditionally. (Mrs. Hannah Smart)

In 1889 Dr Francis Gray Smart, the esteemed first President of the Tunbridge Wells Amateur Photographic Association, undertook a summer tour of Scotland. The discovery of his album of photographs simply titled ‘Scotch Tour 1889’ started a search for the history behind the collection discovered in a second-hand bookshop in Stockport in 1986. A tour made around Scotland over a century ago; The photographs include images of a now vanished world peopled by busy Victorian businessmen, Highland soldiers, tinsmiths, fishermen, crofters, washerwomen and impoverished children.
Dr. Francis Gray Smart, of Tunbridge Wells, had left, among other legacies, £10,000 to Caius College, Cambridge for the Frank Smart Studentship for Botany; founded in 1888 by tho late Francis Gray Smart, MA, MB, and Mrs Smart… (this studentship is still current: apply to The Chancellor, Masters and Scholars of the University of Cambridge)
The Electors to the Frank Smart Studentship in Botany give notice that one or more Studentships will be vacant on 1 October 2009. Graduates of the University are eligible for the Studentship if not more than eighteen complete terms have elapsed after their first term of residence, and Graduate Students, not being graduates of the University, if not more than nine complete terms have elapsed after their first term of actual residence. In addition, all applicants must have been registered as a Graduate Student for at least three terms.
The successful candidate must devote him or herself to research in botany under the direction of the Professor of Botany, who will determine the conditions under which the research is to be conducted and the place or places in which it is to be carried out. The Studentship is tenable for one year, although Graduate Students may make up to two applications for the Studentship, irrespective of whether their first application has been successful. The value of the Studentship is normally a minimum of £1,000 and will be determined by the Electors after taking account of any financial resources that may be available to the Student.
A candidate must send his or her name, with a detailed statement of their research project and progress made, to Professor J. C. Gray at the Department of Plant Sciences, so as to reach him not later than 14 September 2009. Awards will be made effective from 1 October 2009.
