The National Council for Civil Liberties and Homeopathy

The National Council for Civil Liberties was founded by Ronald Hubert Kidd, the grandson of homeopath Joseph Kidd.

Liberty seeks to protect civil liberties and promote human rights for everyone.

The immediate spur to its formation was the National Hunger March, 1932. The first Secretary was Ronald Hubert Kidd, and first President Edward Morgan Forster; Vice-Presidents were the politician and author Alan Patrick Herbert and the journalist Basil Kingsley Martin of the New Statesman, and Clement Attlee, Aneurin Bevan, Havelock Ellis, Aldous Huxley, John Boynton Priestley, Bertrand Arthur William Russell 3rd Earl Russell, and Herbert George Wells among its Vice Presidents.

Liberty was adopted as the working name of the The National Council for Civil Liberties (NCCL).

Ronald Hubert Kidd 1889 - 1942

Ronald Hubert Kidd was a civil rights campaigner, the son of surgeon Leonard Joseph Kidd, grandson of homeopath Joseph Kidd, and nephew of doctors Percy Marmaduke Kidd and Walter Aubrey Kidd.

Ronald Hubert Kidd had a variety of jobs before finding his vocation as a campaigner against injustices in 1930s and 1940s Britain.

In 1934, angered by Police responses to hunger marchers, Ronald Hubert Kidd founded the Council for Civil Liberty (later the National Council for Civil Liberty, or NCCL, now known as Liberty), which included such figures as Edward Morgan Forster as its President, Vice Presidents were the politician and author Alan Patrick Herbert and the journalist Basil Kingsley Martin of the New Statesman. and Clement Attlee, Aneurin Bevan, Havelock Ellis, Aldous Huxley, John Boynton Priestley, Bertrand Russell, and Herbert George Wells among its Vice Presidents.

Aneurin Bevan 1897 – 1960 was a supporter of homeopathy and in 1945, he introduced the National Health Service to the United Kingdom, and he promised that:

”homeopathic institutions will be enabled to provide their own form of treatment and that the continuity of the characteristics of those institutions will be maintained”.

**Havelock Ellis **1859 – 1939 was a British doctor, sexual psychologist and social reformer

Havelock Ellis and his wife Edith Lees Ellis were profoundly influenced by James Hinton, who studied homeopathy, as Havelock Ellis explains in his book Three Modern Seers.

Havelock Ellis took homeopathic remedies and understood homeopathy sufficiently to use it as an analogy in his book Studies in the Psychology of Sex.

Aldous Huxley1894-1963

Aldous Huxley’s mother Mary Augusta Ward was an advocate of homeopathy and a practicing homeopath. Mary Augusta Ward was a friend of James John Garth Wilkinson and her name is in his address book (Swedenborg Archive Address Book of James John Garth Wilkinson dated 1895).

Bertrand Arthur William Russell 3rd Earl Russell, OM, FRS 1872 – 1970 was a British philosopher, logician, mathematician, historian, socialist, pacifist and social critic.

Bertrand Russell’s paternal grandfather, John Russell 1st Earl Russell, was the third son of John Russell 6th Duke of Bedford, and had twice been asked by Queen Victoria to form a government, serving her as Prime Minister in the 1840s and 1860s.

Bertrand Russell’s godfather was John Stuart Mill, who was a friend of Edwin Chadwick and John Chapman, and he was a friend of homeopaths Jean Barthelemy Arles Dufour and James John Garth Wilkinson. John Stuart Mill knew many homeopathic advocates and supporters Though John Stuart Mill died the year after Bertrand Russell’s birth, his writings had a great effect on Bertrand Russell’s life.

Herbert George Wells 1866 – 1946

Herbert George Wells was a friend of Aubrey Vincent Beardsley, and Mary Everest Boole, the daughter of homeopath Thomas Roupell Everest, and he was also close friend of George Bernard Shaw and Henry James Junior, and he studied under Thomas Henry Huxley at the Royal College of Science, now part of Imperial College London.

Herbert George Wells also taught and admired Alan Alexander Milne. Herbert George Wells had an affair with Margaret Sanger, who was a friend of Charles Vickery Drysdale and his wife, members of the famous homeopathic Drysdale family.

All of these friends were advocates of homeopathy.

Herbert George Wells was a vegetarian and a supporter of homeopathy, and he recommended homeopathic treatment for his wife Jane when she was ill with cancer.
